About the New York State Conference of Bar Leaders
The New York State Conference of Bar Leaders was organized in 1979 to
provide a forum for the exchange of information among local bar leaders,
as well as between the New York State Bar Association and bar leaders.
Past and present bar leaders throughout the state comprise the
Conference's membership. Membership automatically extends to past and
present local bar officers and members of local bar governing boards;
past and present members of the NYSBA House of Delegates; and bar
association professional staff.
The Conference sponsors two major events a year. The fall
meeting is geared toward substantive and managerial issues of concern to
local bar leaders. Registration is open to past and present bar leaders.
Past programs have prepared presidents-elect for bar leadership, and
addressed issues such as: attorney discipline, delivery of legal
services to the poor, leadership through service, judicial selection,
public relations, and public
service programs.
Special activities presented by the Conference have included
legislative workshops, public relations programs and a breakfast for bar
leaders during the NYSBA Annual meeting. These activities have met with
great success. Bar leaders have found that Conference programs provide a
valuable forum for sharing ideas and information of mutual concern.
The Conference is governed by an Executive Council of twenty-three
members, one of whom serves as chair, and includes both at-large members
and representatives of each of the State's judicial districts. Over the
years, the Conference has made every effort to include representatives
of both large and small bar associations, as well as ethnic, minority
and women's bars. Two members of the Executive Council are chief staff
executives of bar associations. The president-elect of the NYSBA and a
representative of the Network of Bar Leaders also serves as members.
The Executive Council usually meets four times a year: during the
NYSBA Annual Meeting in January, by conference call in June, and during
the Conference's fall meeting and spring workshops. The Executive
Council addresses substantive issues and plans the Conference's
programs.
Staff support for the Conference is provided by the NYSBA Department
of Bar Services. Conference expenses are defrayed by the NYSBA and
nominal program registration fees.
