2011 Howard A. Levine Award for Excellence in
Juvenile Justice and Child Welfare Award
The New York State Bar Association’s Committee on Children and the Law each year
presents the Howard A. Levine Award for Excellence in Juvenile Justice
and Child Welfare to recognize individuals who have done outstanding
work to improve New York's child welfare and juvenile justice
systems.
New York State Court of Appeals Chief Judge Jonathan
Lippman and Stephanie Gendell of New York City are the recipients of
the 2011 Howard A. Levine Award for Excellence in Juvenile Justice and
Child Welfare sponsored by the New York State Bar Association Committee
on Children and the Law.
The award, presented on May 4, 2011 at the State Bar Center in
Albany, recognizes individuals who have done outstanding work protecting
and promoting the rights of New York’s children.

The Awards were presented on May 4, 2011, at a ceremony
and reception at the State Bar Center in Albany. Stephen P.
Younger, Esq. (Patterson Belknap Webb & Tyler LLP), President of the
New York State Bar Association gave welcoming remarks and introduced
Professor Merril Sobie of Pace University School of Law. Professor
Sobie chairs the Committee on Children and the Law and provided a
legislative update entitled "Children's Law Update". The
award ceremony concluded with a reception sponsored by the Committee on
Children and the Law.
Past winners of the Howard A. Levine Award for
Excellence in Juvenile Justice and Child Welfare include State Senator
Velmanette Montgomery (D-Brooklyn), chair of the Senate Committee on
Children and the Families; Gladys Carrión, commissioner of the New
York State Office of Children & Family Services; Hon. Eugene F.
Pigott, Jr., associate judge of the New York State Court of Appeals;
Assemblywoman Helene E. Weinstein; and Hon. Judith S. Kaye, retired
Chief Judge of the New York State Court of Appeals.
