“Animal Cruelty: From Dog Fighting to Hoarding - The Laws
Governing Society’s Response”
January 2008 CLE Program (not recorded)
This two and a half hour program focused on the subject
of animal cruelty. The reporting of star football player Michael
Vick and his involvement in illegal dog fighting shined a spotlight on a
particularly heinous form of animal cruelty in American society.
Animal cruelty takes many forms, and it was the goal of this program to
educate the participants on the relevant laws and their
implementation. This program provided the audience with a survey
of the laws - both state and federal - that address animal
cruelty. The speakers provided an understanding of what
constitutes cruelty under these laws and what mechanisms are triggered
when such an incident is found.
In addition to providing the basic foundation for an
understanding of cruelty under the law, among the presenters were
attorneys who have brought cases pursuant to these laws, who analyzed
these matters to enhance our understanding of the laws and their
effectiveness.

“Anatomy of a Dangerous Dog Case: How to Handle a
Case Pursuant to Agriculture and Markets Article 7, Sections 108 and
121”
May 2007 CLE Program (audio recorded)
This program was a follow up on the success of the
Dangerous Dogs or Irresponsible Owners program presented in November
2006. The presentation was a nuts and bolts program intended to
educate more attorneys to take these cases.
The number of dogs is growing in this country and,
unfortunately, so is the number of dog bites – this is a serious
public health issue, particularly for children. While much needs
to be done in enforcement of the significant New York laws that lend
themselves to bite protection such as licensing and leash laws, when
bites do occur, it is important that all those involved are guaranteed
due process in order to help ensure a just outcome. Click
