Pro Bono Committee
Welcome to the Senior Lawyers Section’s Pro Bono
Committee home page!
The need for pro bono work is broad. There are many attorneys
across the state who are willing to donate their time and expertise
toward legitimate needs, but the challenge often comes with matching
available resources to the need.
While any lawyer can donate her or his time in pro bono service, we
believe that senior lawyers represent an especially rich repository of
potential in this area. Of course not all senior lawyers are
retired; but for those who are retired or who have reduced their working
hours, there may be increased opportunity to branch out into areas of
public service, where personal or professional commitments had otherwise
prevented it. Regardless of working status, senior lawyers have a
wealth of experience that can be harnessed for the good of the
public. It is our desire to see the legal needs of the public met,
while at the same time providing lawyers—specifically those who
are members of the Senior Lawyers Section—with an avenue for
meaningful service to society.
The Senior Lawyers Section Pro Bono Committee expects to not
only focus on the support and encouragement of senior lawyers’
participation in pro bono service, but also anticipates exploring other
topics, including emeritus rules, appropriate training for certain pro
bono programs, possible opportunities for free or reduced-rate CLE
programs in exchange for pro bono service, how to best advertise and
promote pro bono initiatives without duplicating the efforts of other
organizations, and how to make it easier to find pro bono opportunities
in various locations throughout the state. The Committee will work
closely with the NYSBA Pro Bono Department to ensure that initiatives
for senior lawyers are readily identified, coordinated and promoted.
We hope that you will join us in supporting the work of pro bono!
