Help us sponsor
the LYC High School Mock Trial program!
For
only $5, you can help the Senior Lawyers Section
sponsor the New York State Bar Association’s Law, Youth and
Citizenship program.
Senior Lawyers
Section Chair Walter T. Burke has received a letter from Law Youth and
Citizenship Committee Chairperson James Hanlon, a copy of which appears
below, requesting Section sponsorship of the High School Mock Trial
program.
As a Section we
hope to reach the State Championship Level Sponsor ($1,000): As a new
Section, we have not yet built up sufficient reserve funds for such a
program sponsorship – but if we all pull together, for just a
small amount each, we can help with this worthy cause. If Section
members contribute a total of $500 (which can be achieved if 100 Section
members donate $5 each), the Section will match the $500, to reach the
$1,000 State Championship level. If you could take just a minute of your time and
donate, we would certainly appreciate it!
Or send a check
made out to NYSBA (memo line "SLS LYC contribution"), c/o Stephanie
Bugos, New York State Bar Association, One Elk Street, Albany, NY 12207.

From the
Law, Youth and Citizenship Committee:
As chairperson of
the New York State Bar Association’s Law, Youth and Citizenship
Committee, I am appealing to you to consider a sponsorship of the New
York State Bar Association’s High School Mock Trial
program.
The New York State
Bar Association’s Mock Trial program is one of the oldest and
largest Mock Trial programs in the country. Nearly 4,000 students from
public and non public schools participate in the tournament each year.
Students who participate in the program gain a deeper understanding of
the law, court procedures, and the legal system while improving their
public speaking and reasoning skills. The Mock Trial program also
fosters relationships between the legal and the educational community
by bringing teachers and attorneys together to coach and mentor
teams.
To support the
Mock Trial program, the Law, Youth and Citizenship committee also has
created a Mock Trial Summer Institute which is a week long educational
and recreation camp that provides intensive instruction in all facets
of Mock Trial and team work to the students that are chosen to attend.
Now entering its 6th year of operation, the Mock Trial Summer Institute
is a much anticipated summer activity to the students involved in Mock
Trial each year.
Both the Mock
Trial tournament and the Mock Trial Summer Institute have relied on
funding provided by the New York Bar Foundation to provide a superior
program at a low or no cost to students in New York State. As greater
demands by many worthy organizations are being placed on the
Foundation, the funding provided by the Foundation to the Mock Trial
programs has diminished.
This is why the
Law, Youth and Citizenship Committee is appealing to your section to
assist in keeping the Mock Trial program a vibrant, low-cost,
law-related educational experience for students in New York State.
Please consider a
sponsorship at one of the levels below:
State
Championship Level Sponsor ($1,000): The name of your section will
be displayed on Mock Trial materials, including the case booklet and
website. Two tickets will be provided for representatives of your
section to attend the Mock Trial Finals and luncheon in May.
Regional Winner
Level Sponsor ($500): The name of your section will be displayed
on Mock Trial materials. Two tickets will be provided for
representatives of your section to attend the Mock Trial Finals and
luncheon in May.
Local Winner
Level Sponsor ($250): The name of your section displayed on Mock
Trial materials and on the Mock Trial finals luncheon
program.
I look forward to
your section’s involvement with this important educational
experience for teenagers in New York. For your convenience, a form is
attached that can be used to indicate your level of sponsorship.
Please contact Stacey Whiteley, Mock Trial Program Manager, (518)
486-5760 or swhiteley@nysba.org, with any questions you may
have. I wish to thank you in advance for your support and generosity
for this truly worthy cause.
Sincerely,
James Hanlon,
Esq.
