May 4, 2015: New York State Bar Association Hosts International Legal Experts For Global Law Week: May 12 - 14, 2015

Experts to Explore Challenges and Opportunities of Practicing Law in a Global Marketplace

The International Section of the New York State Bar Associationwill hold its biennial Global Law Week from May 12—May 15 in New York City, offering four days of engaging lectures, seminars and panel discussions on an array of timely topics in the field of international practice. 

The program, held at venues throughout Manhattan, is hosted and sponsored by some of the city’s major law firms and institutions. It will feature expert panelists from multinational law firms, worldwide corporations, law schools, and the judiciary.

“New York stands at the international crossroads of law and business,”said Thomas N. Pieper, chair of the International Section of the New York State Bar Association. “Global Law Week provides a forum for top experts to share the latest developments in international law and insights into legal issues at the forefront of global commerce.”

 Panel topics include:

  • Doing business with Cuba (recent legal developments)
  • International awards and judgments involving major corporations
  • Global mergers and acquisitions
  • International arbitration and litigation
  • Protecting intellectual property globally vis-à-vis the internet
  • Virtual currencies across borders
  • Introducing international products and services to the U.S. market
  • International trusts, estates and tax law developments
  • Hot topics in claims against foreign sovereigns
  • Immigration and family law issues

At an opening reception on Tuesday, May 12, Chief Judge Jonathan Lippman will speak on the place of New York law in global legal practice. At the closing session on Friday, May 15,  Chief Judge Loretta Preska of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, will address, “The Elements of Commerce in the Twenty-First Century: How Commercial Courts Enhance a City’s Position as a Financial, Commercial, and Legal Hub.”

Global Law Week panels are designed for practitioners at all levels of experience, from those encountering international practice issues for the first time to practitioners with many years of experience. Individual programs run from May 12—May 15 and offer between 1.0 and 2.0 CLE credits. 

The full-day “Fundamentals of International Law” program on Tuesday, May 12 is designed for newly admitted attorneys seeking an overview of essential topics of international law, and offers 7.5 MCLE credits.  Early registration is suggested for this popular program.
