Sharon Robinson will step up to the R.H. Jackson Center’s podium to speak on her inspirational book, Jackie’s Nine, and to discuss its success, along with her father’s success and his impact on Civil Rights and people all across the globe. It details nine principles for all people to follow, to reach goals set for themselves, the same principles followed by Jackie Robinson, breaker of the color barrier in Major League Baseball.
The program is applicable for students in grades 5 through 12, and multi-aged book club members, but is also appropriate for adults as well. Students viewing the presentation must have read Ms. Robinson’s book prior to this event, or teachers may choose to read the book aloud to classes. Theme: Throughout his life, Jackie Robinson exemplified the values of courage, determination, teamwork, persistence, integrity, citizenship, justice, commitment, and excellence. Jackie Robinson lived these nine values and inspired others to follow his example. In Jackie Robinson’s own words, “A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives.”
Task: Using examples from Jackie’s Nine: Jackie Robinson’s Values to Live By, write an essay that tells how Jackie Robinson and one of the other individuals in this book exemplified these nine values.
The winners, selected from throughout New York State, will be notified by mail.
Each winner will be awarded a $500 U.S. Savings Bond. Each winner will be invited to meet author Sharon Robinson in Jamestown, New York on Feb. 18, 2014.
Requirements You must be a 5th through 12th grade student in New York State. You must complete the “Essay Contest Enrollment Form” and follow the “Essay Format” as posted using the links below.
