Carolyn Hansen

Carolyn Hansen

Carolyn Hansen is an experienced mediator, arbitrator, and attorney who brings a quick mind and centering presence to all pursuits. She is a decisive, articulate legal and dispute resolution professional with exceptional advisory, negotiating, writing and administrative skills. She is able to quickly assimilate new concepts, handle complex high-stakes transactions and work comfortably in a variety of cultures and business settings. As creator and leader of non-profit and for-profit organizations, she conceptualizes, articulates and implements vision plans that involve others and benefit society.

For 12 years she has maintained a private mediation practice and also mediated commercial and family law disputes referred by various courts. She is on the approved panel of mediators for the Supreme Court, Commercial Division, Nassau County and the Supreme Court State of New York, New York County, Commercial Division ADR Program.

Because of Carolyn’s extensive cross cultural and foreign language expertise, for example, she was chosen to mediate an international commercial dispute in Mandarin Chinese involving parties from China and Taiwan. She speaks Mandarin Chinese and has a working knowledge of Spanish.

From 1974 to 1988, she served first as international counsel for S.C. Johnson: A Family Company, then at Schering-Plough Corporation, and finally as head of the law department of Ralston Purina Company’s international division (RPI). In those capacities she oversaw and negotiated business arrangements in over sixty countries and developed extensive expertise in international business and U.S. trade law. For eight of those years she also served as a security-cleared advisor to the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative and the U.S. Department of Commerce on international trade negotiations, including NAFTA and WTO.

While living in Taiwan from early 1988 through late 1999, she founded and led Hansen International Company, Ltd., an international law advisory firm. There she refined her extensive expertise in cross cultural negotiation while representing North American and European clients doing business in greater China. She is currently in private practice in the Hudson Valley focusing on international and domestic commercial mediation and arbitration, commercial law and non-profit organizations.

As a member of the International Academy of Law and Mental Health she is active in the international movement for therapeutic jurisprudence, which brings psychology into the training and practice of law. She served on the board of the New York State Dispute Resolution Association from 2002 to 2005 and has served on professional, business, and non-profit organization boards of directors. She is currently completing a chapter on international mediation for a book about new developments in law being compiled by attorneys in the Project of Integrating Spirituality, Law and Politics. Carolyn leads self-determination workshops in the U.S. and around the world teaching people how to center themselves and work in a more healthy way.
