A Year in the Life of the TICL Section: 2014 in Review

Members of the TICL Section joined together in Chicago this past August for the Section’s Summer Meeting, which included both timely MCLE presentations and family-friendly local attractions. Program sessions examined, among other topics: business generation and rainmaking; cyber liability; asbestos litigation in New York; and the future of the practice of law.

Committed to fostering diversity in the legal profession, in November the Section presented Strength by Association: Mentoring and the Power of Diversity – an ethics MCLE panel discussion designed both for diverse young attorneys entering the workforce, for employers, and attorneys of all backgrounds seeking to better understand how to effectively engage and practice law in an increasingly diverse environment. The Section’s Distinguished Jurist Award was presented to the Honorable Jenny Rivera, who served on the panel.

The TICL Section annually produces its Law School for Insurance Professionals at locations across the State—a program aimed at educating insurance professionals and their counsel in practical aspects of the law that affect their industry.

The Section holds local district and committee events, giving members an opportunity to network with fellow TICL practitioners and members of the judiciary. The Section’s online community also gives members an avenue for engagement in the Section, regardless of location.

The Section works in conjunction with the NYSBA Committee on Continuing Legal Education to produce MCLE programs throughout the State. Recent co-sponsored programs include a three-location program with live webcast in March, Premises Liability 2015: What You Need to Know in New York, and a five-location program in May, Insurance Coverage Update 2015: Coverage Disputes and Litigation.

The TICL and Trial Lawyers Sections joined forces for an MCLE program at the 2015 Annual Meeting. Topics included attorney professional conduct and misconduct; products liability; future damages; and an evidence update.  The distinguished honoree at the Sections’ annual dinner, held at Cipriani Wall Street, was Hon. Leslie E. Stein.

Consistent with the aims of NYSBA’s Pathway to the Profession initiative, the Section is holding a “Prepare to Practice” Seminar at the SUNY Buffalo Law School, in association with the Bar Association of Erie County’s Young Lawyers Committee. Further law student programs and initiatives will take place throughout the year, with aims of helping law students to smoothly and successfully transition into the practice of law. Additionally, the Section is proud to serve as a sponsor of the annual Young Lawyer Trial Academy to help train up the next generation of trial attorneys.

This coming October 9-12, the Section’s Fall Meeting will be held at Loews Royal Pacific Resort at Universal Orlando. Details can be found here.
