Bridging the Gap 2006: From Theory to Practice
This program offers a total of 16 MCLE credits to newly admitted attorneys and recent law school graduates. By attending a two-day session, you can fullfill your CLE requirements for the entire year! During the Thursday, January 26, 2006, morning session, experienced faculty and young
attorneys will discuss getting started in the profession and will provide a legal "refresher" of the real life issues of practicing tort, family and criminal law in New York. The afternoon session will discuss the ins and outs of settlement negotiations and the art of lawyering "on your feet" in the midst of trial practice. On Friday, January 27, 2006, our experts will discuss avoiding malpractice claims and other ethical issues, how to avoid the "beginner's" traps in real estate practice, and will once again, provide an opportunity for participants to get a view from the Bench, as judges from various courts provide practical and procedural advice.

Baxter, Jr., Esq., Executive Vice President and General Counsel, Federal Reserve Bank of New York.
2. "Redlining Revisited: Are the Fair Lending Laws Doing Their Job?
Since the Civil Rights Revolution of the 1960's, the Congress, as Well as Many States, Notably New York, Have Enacted Laws Designed to Insure That All Citizens Have Equal Access to Credit, Without Regard to Race, Gender or Other Prohibited Factors. The Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) of 1978 Went a Step Further, Placing Upon Banks the Affirmative Duty to Make Credit Available in the Markets From Which They Derive Their Deposits, Especially to Low and Middle Income Persons, Who Historically May Have Been Victimized by 'Redlining' -- the Refusal to Lend in Certain Neighborhoods That Were Deemed Too Risky, Without Regard to the Individual Borrower's Creditworthiness. But There Continues to be a Wide Divergence of Views as to Whether, and How Well, These Laws Have Fulfilled Their Objective. More Recently There Have Been Allegations of 'Predatory' Lending -- the Offering of Credit Only on Onerous or Unfair Terms -- and New York's Attorney General Spitzer Has Clashed With the Federal Government Over the Question of Whether the States Can Enforce These Laws Against Federally-Chartered Banks. Our Panel Brings Together the Perspectives of Consumers, Banks, Regulators and Academics, With an Emphasis on How the Fair Lending Laws Affect Business Practitioners in New York."
