My Experience at NYSBA’s Annual Meeting
by Arthur Shalagin

My involvement with NYSBA began when I reached out to the chairs of the Business Law and Corporate Counsel Sections. For the Corporate Counsel Section, I interviewed Lura Hess Bechtel, Esq. (Associate General Counsel at First Niagara Financial Group, Inc.) for the Winter 2015 Issue of the Section’s Newsletter, Inside. I spearheaded the rollout of the Business Law Section’s online community, working with a former chair of the section, Jay L. Hack.

NYSBA’s Annual Meeting and Bar Leaders Breakfast
By Ligia Alvarenga

I joined the New York State Bar Association (“NYSBA”) as a student member as soon as I started my Fall 2015 semester at Cardozo, after my Startup Law classmate at Cardozo, Arthur Shalagin, told me about the awesome opportunities that the organization provided for leadership and networking. As a practicing attorney coming from Brazil, we are not really used to the “networking culture”. So when I started my Intellectual Property LL.M. here, it came as a shock to me the power of networking. I had to start all over again as a professional, so the NYSBA so far has given me many opportunities to be involved in the networking environment.

Who Could Possibly Be Against This: Facebook, Free Internet and the Digital Divide
By Lexi Herman

According to the Internet.org website; Free Basics by Facebook provides internet access to people in 38 countries; including India, Iraq and Mexico.  Facebook teamed up with mobile operators around the world to allow those who live in countries where mobile data is expensive to have free access to websites for “news, employment, health, education and local information”.  Facebook’s hope is that by providing access to the internet, the residents of these countries will start to benefit from the creation of the internet.

Want to Meet and Mingle with the Professionals?  Attend NYSBA's Annual Meeting
By Eugene Frenkel

Attending the 2016 New York State Bar Association (NYSBA) Annual Meeting was an interesting and informative experience. It exposed me to areas of the law that I was not aware of, allowed me to network with NYSBA leaders and help honor hard-working attorneys trying to improve their communities.

The NYSBA Annual Meeting: Where Past, Present, and Future Meet For A Better Tomorrow
By Kyeko Stewart

I was honored to get to shake the hand of Patricia E. Salkin, the 2015 recipient of the Ruth G. Schapiro Memorial Award, given by the Committee on Women. During the House of Delegates Meeting, I had the opportunity to learn about the groundbreaking lifetime achievements of the late Honorable Judith S. Kaye. Although I did not get the opportunity to meet her personally, I did have the occasion of learning about Constitutional Law from one of her former colleagues on the Court of Appeals, the (former) Honorable Robert S. Smith.
