11:05 a.m. – 11:55 a.m. Introduction to Jury Selection - The fundamentals of picking a jury will be discussed such as conducting voir dire, use of peremptory challenges versus challenges for cause, and the governing statutes for jury selection

11:55 a.m. – 12:45 p.m. History of Batson v. Kentucky and its progeny - The background of the seminal case, Batson v. Kentucky, which forbids discrimination during jury selection, and its progeny will be examined, together with the legal standard for making a Batson challenge.

12:45 p.m. – 1:35 p.m. Judicial Trial Court and Appellate View - A panel of experienced judges will outline their roles with respect to issues presented during jury selection at the trial and appellate level and governing jurisprudence. Both the federal and New York State rules of procedure will be highlighted.

Partial Credit for Program Segments Not Allowed: Under the New York State Continuing Legal Education Board Regulations and Guidelines, attendees at CLE programs cannot get MCLE credit for a program segment (typically, a lecture or panel, of which there are usually several in a program) unless they are present for the entire segment. Those who arrive late, depart early, or are absent for any portion of the segment WILL NOT receive credit for that program segment.
