Karen Gilbreath Sowell
Karen Gilbreath Sowell of Ernst & Young’s National Tax Department is the new chair of the Tax Section.
A co-leader of Ernst & Young’s mergers and acquisitions group, Sowell has advised the firm’s most significant clients on complex transactions. From 1997 to 2001, Sowell was an Attorney Advisor and Associate Tax Legislative Counsel at the U.S. Department of Treasury Office of Tax Policy, primarily responsible for matters relating to corporate taxation in a period of prolific guidance. From July 2007 to January 2009, Sowell was the U.S. Treasury’s Deputy Assistant Secretary for Tax Policy, focused on legislation and guidance directed at economic stabilization.
Sowell is a former chair of the Corporations Committee of the Tax Section of the American Bar Association. She received her law degree and LL.M in Taxation from Georgetown University Law School.
